Summer Institute in Papyrology at the Istituto Papirologico “G. Vitelli”

The American Society of Papyrologists and the Istituto Papirologico “G. Vitelli” are sponsoring a summer institute in papyrology for advanced graduate students and junior faculty in ancient studies (classics, history, religious studies, Egyptology, archaeology, and related disciplines). The institute, which will run in Florence from 1 through 26 July 2024, will focus on documentary papyri from the Roman period in the Papiri della Società Italiana collection housed at the “Vitelli”. The principal objective of the institute is to provide participants with sufficient instruction and practical experience to enable them to make productive use of texts on papyrus in their research and, if desired, to become active scholars in the field of papyrology. Hands-on experience with original materials will be combined with lectures and assignments addressing historical, methodological, and ethical questions; an orientation to Demotic Studies will also be part of the program. Instruction will be in English.
Admission to the institute is by application. Enrollment is limited to twelve participants. Applications are welcome from qualified individuals without regard to institutional affiliation. No prior experience in papyrology is necessary, but a high degree of competence in ancient Greek is essential.
A full-time commitment to the activities of the institute will be required of participants, who will be expected to be in residence in Florence for its duration. The practica and lectures will take place at the Istituto Vitelli. Instruction will be five days a week. The principal faculty will be Francesca Maltomini (Istituto Papirologico “G. Vitelli”, University of Florence) and Todd Hickey (University of California, Berkeley).
Participation in the institute is free of charge and not for credit. Attendees will neither be graded nor issued a transcript. The American Society of Papyrologists will provide a certificate of participation to those completing the institute. Successful applicants will receive a stipend (€2000 for those residing in the EU, €2500 for others) but are also expected to seek financial support from their home institutions. University of Florence housing will be available to participants for a fee.
Applications, which consist of a completed application form, a current curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation must be received by 1:00pm (Central European Standard Time) on 3 January 2024. The application form and the attached documents should be sent to selezioni(AT)letterefilosofia.unifi.it. Referees should send their letters of recommendation directly to: elena.batzu(AT)unifi.it.
